Crime of Galileo

I'm reading The Crime of Galileo by George De Santillana. I'm reading it for a book club meeting. It's the second book I've read lately on Galileo, and it's frustrating me a bit because the author seems too damn sympathetic to the Church. His thesis is that Galileo's real enemies were academics who in turn sicced the Church on him. This seems likely to be the case, but I don't think it lets the Church off the moral hook.

Silly rhyme of the day:

The Church used its power to ban his book.
I'll never let them off the hook.

Of course, in the nineties I think, the Church did apologize and forgive Galileo.

Well, better late than never.
