Self Made Man

Is the name of a statue, or a set of statues.

Today I was riding my bike through beautiful Batavia, Illinois, when my sis asked me whether I had seen the cool statue of a man carving himself out of stone. So I rode back to take a look.

Sure enough, that's what is was. It was a bronze statue. I wondered briefly why he was using a hammer and chisel on bronze, but that was merely a momentary attack of literal mindedness. I get those.

The thing was, I thought I had seen the basic composition idea somewhere. Anyway, I got home and tried to google it. I found a couple of references to it, but not a pic. I did find a pic of a very similar statue in Denver. Just scroll down a little here:

And here's a free verse thingy someone wrote about the Batavia statue:

Anyway, I think it's a cute idea. It reminds me a bit of the Pygmalion legend, in which a sculptor creates a statue of a beautiful woman, falls in love with it, and it comes to life for him. For two famous paintings plus a statue of that, scroll down here:

Cold concepts into
Something live and warm.
