My daughter the freshman says she loves it there. She told a funny story about something that happened in her Greek class. The teacher announced he was giving a quiz. One student complained. The teacher asked him why he was complaining, since they wouldn't be graded on the quiz - and each was to grade his own quiz.
I guess that's one way to quiet the perpetual quiz-bemoaners.
I'm all in favor of objective standards, but I think you can get by fine without grades. Did Socrates grade Plato? Did Plato grade Aristotle? Did Aristotle grade Alexander?
With some consistency, St. John's also declines to get graded itself. It does not participate in the annual U.S. News & World ranking of colleges. As the school's president puts it: "These rankings involve too much counting and too little judgment."
