Evil Empire

I'm missing most of the coverage about Ronald Reagan's death. That's because I get almost all my news off the internet and from the newspaper, and you don't have to sit through the stories that don't interest you like you do on TV. You just skip to the next story.

Nonetheless, I find myself feeling something for his passing. He was a complicated man, and there were things I didn't like about him at all. But he did call the Soviet Union an "Evil Empire," and I have to love him for that.

It was extremely controversial when he did it. It was seen as dangerous. But it was, quite simply, true. It was evil, not good. It was an empire, not a nation.

I'm not saying he always told the truth. As I recall, he probably fudged the truth a bit around the Iran-Contra affair.

But it takes an odd kind of courage, at times, to speak the obvious. And he had a gift for that.

Rhyme of the day:

Ronald Reagan delivered his oration:
"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
And then, beyond expectation,
It did come down, after all.

If you don't know what this rhyme is about, you can read quite a bit here:

here is the full text of his "Berlin Wall" speech, replete with lots of religious stuff that I do not agree with:
