An asterisk, tsk tsk

Olympic gymnastics judges are now reported to have made an error in awarding Paul Hamm the gold medal. They are letting him keep the medal, they say, but really it should have gone to the number 2 guy, Yang Tae Young of South Korea. This is what's called having an asterisk after your name in the record books - you know, the kind of asterisk that points to a note that says you won because of a judging error that wasn't protested in time.

I do feel bad for Paul Hamm. I feel even worse for Yang Tae Young. He gets an asterisk too, I guess. His asterisk says that instead of silver he should have gotten gold.

How do mistakes like this happen? I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that gymnastics scoring is a bit on the subjective side. But I don't know.
